Commonwealth Shared Scholarships
Our MA Understanding and Securing Human Rights programme has been allocated two scholarships from the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Details of the awards can be found under the 'Financial assistance' tab on the scholarship website.

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship programme is one of three Master’s programmes offered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.
Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from DFID) and UK universities, to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK. Shared Scholarships are offered on an annual basis for Master’s study only.
Purpose
Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), Commonwealth Shared Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.
Intended beneficiaries
Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are for candidates from eligible low and middle income Commonwealth countries, to undertake full-time taught Master’s study.
The scholarships for the MA Understanding Human Rights come under Strengthening Global Peace, Security and Governance development theme.
How to apply
Applications for Commonwealth Shared Scholarships must be made using the CSC’s online application system.
The Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust Scholarships
The Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust will be supporting two students per year to undertake the School of Advanced Study’s MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights.
Two scholarships will be offered per year and the first recipients will take up their studies in September 2023
Criteria for the awards
- Scholars will be enrolled on the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights.
- Scholars will originate from low- and middle-income countries, as defined by the World Bank.
- Scholars will be resident in the UK for the duration of their studies.
- Each scholar will be funded for tuition fees and maintenance costs, at a rate of £28,000 per year (for full time students) and £12,795 per year (for part time students)
- The scholarship scheme will begin in September 2023 and run for a period of three years.

The James Manor Bursary
The James Manor Bursary is given in the name of Professor James Manor, who has been long associated with the Institute of Commonwealth Studies and who had a pivotal role in founding the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights. We are honoured to offer this bursary in recognition of his distinguished career.

Value
Up to four Bursaries are offered, each equal to up to a maximum of 50% of the applicable tuition fee.
Eligibility
This Bursary is awarded students who have applied for the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights at the Human Rights Consortium or its Latin American Human Rights pathway.
The bursaries are awarded on a competitive basis according to the academic potential of the applicant, with preference given to students with demonstrated financial need.

The deadline for applications is 7 June 2023 (16:00 GMT). Please note that applicants must also have applied to the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights by the deadline; bursary applicants who have not applied to the MA may not be considered.

The Yusuf Ali Scholarship
The Yusuf Ali Fund was established in 1956, following the death of Mr Yusuf Ali. Its purpose then was to assist University of London students from India and Pakistan and was used in a discretionary manner for many years. Today, we are honoured to offer the Yusuf Ali Scholarship for students of Indian, Pakistani and/or Bangladeshi descent to enable them to study on one of the campus-based postgraduate programmes offered by the Institute of Commonwealth Studies and the Human Rights Consortium at the School of Advanced Study, University of London. Currently, these are the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights and its pathway in the Human Rights of Latin America, and research degrees.
Eligibility and how to apply
Value
Awards will range in value between £3,000 and £7795, depending on the financial need of applicants, as demonstrated in the application form. The decision to make an award will be dependent on the excellence of the applicant’s academic and professional experience. The total amount awarded to any applicants is at the discretion of the selection panel.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be of Indian, Pakistani and/or Bangladeshi descent.
- Applicants must have applied to study on a campus-based Master’s or MPhil/PhD programme at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies or Human Rights Consortium by the application deadline. Currently the eligible programmes are the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights and its pathway in the Human Rights of Latin America, as well as research degrees at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies and the Human Rights Consortium. The Award cannot be used to undertake any other programme of study, including other degree programmes at the School of Advanced Study or University of London.
- This award is only available for students undertaking full-time studies at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies and Human Rights Consortium.
- Please note that all applicants will need to adhere to the School of Advanced Study and Institute’s entrance requirements and English language competency requirements.

The deadline for applications is 1 July 2023 (23:59 GMT). Any applications received after this time may not be considered. The panel deciding on the allocation of awards will meet shortly after this and successful applicants will be informed of the outcome within 6 weeks of the deadline.
