Research Training

Research students areencouraged to audit the Researching Human Rights: Social Science Research Methods module, which is offered as part of the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights during the Spring Term. The Researching Human Rights module goes well beyond the ordinary requirements of a Master's degree and is specifically designed to support students who intend to pursue a research degree or a career in human rights research. It is specifically designed to introduce students to research as it relates to human rights topics, and covers issues such as ethics and consent as well as practical methods skills.

The conceptual and practical information will enable research students to better design the Methodology section of their eventual thesis and to develop an effective research plan. 

The BSPN is a shared skills training programme which enables students to enhance their research skills through attending workshops and training courses hosted by participating institutions across the network. The programme of courses available will provide you with guidance on developing a research project by building your knowledge base and providing you with skills in research methodologies, but also focus on practical elements such as funding research. A number of courses also focus on building skills associated with employability; for example, a number of courses are offered on practical issues such as writing engaging prose, or on key requirements such as achieving research impact, which is particularly helpful for those students seeking to pursue an academic career after graduation.

In addition to giving students access to a wide range of courses, attending BSPN training events will enable you to meet and network with students from participating institutions across the University of London. 

PORT is the School's public research training platform, providing postgraduate researchers in the humanities with online research skills training. PORT offers a range of resources accessible online across a range of disciplines, including training on digital tools for research, managing research data, and how to use software such as SPSS.
